The Gruffalo

12th Feb 2017
The Gruffalo

This week we explored the popular text "The Gruffalo" by the author Julia Donaldson.

On Wednesday we visited Parkanuar Forest, with our new friends from Saint Mary's P.S. Pomeroy, Queen Elizabeth P.S. Pomeroy and Donaghmore P.S. We enjoyed lots of play activities in the Parkanaur play room and then we went deep into the forest on the hunt for the REAL Gruffalo...and do you know, we found him near the deer park...sleeping in his den!! We also found out lots of information about forest animals and their habitats.

When we returned to school we explored a variety of Gruffalo themed play activities in the small world trays, building log pile houses for the snake and finding nuts for the mouse. We painted pictures of the different characters we met in the story and wrote some sentences to match our pictures. In the tuff tray we made some Gruffalo crumble using sand and shaving foam...it was a lot of fun!!

At the end of the week we did some cold cookery, we made some of the characters from the story out of different types of food. We spread, buttered, sliced and made our own fox, owl, Gruffalo and mouse... And we enjoyed eating them just as much as we did making them, some of us even tried new foods for the first time!

We hope you enjoy looking at our pictures of some of our activities.
