Making Music connecting real instruments (the drums) to Garageband

26th Jan 2016

As part of our WAU Topic 'The Titanic' we are learning more about creating podcasts using Garageband to share on Holy Trinity's VLE.

Our first task was to create a podcast to represent water, then the crash into the iceberg and the scraping noise as the liner was in contact with the iceberg.  Pupils found it challenging to create a water sound but enjoyed experimenting with the different instruments.   Pupils listened to each others podcasts and shared what they liked most about the podcast and how well each group presented the collision with the iceberg.

The second task was to create Irish themed music to represent the lower class entertainment.  The pupils were very quick to offer their ideas about what instruments could be used to create Irish music.  The pupils used loops from the various mandolins to their podcasts and added instruments to the loop.  All podcasts were excellent and the pupils really enjoyed telling their peers what they liked about the different podcasts.

All pupils also got to learn more about Garageband by linking the drums to the smart drums in the app.  Pupils were able to repeat rhythms and make new rhythms up using both the drum kit and the smart drums in the app.  The pupils learned about the different music available on the electronic drum kit and how they could create the exact same music using Garageband.  The pupils were able to present the liner's collision with the iceberg using the drums.
