Famine Experience

8th Mar 2019

Primary 7 attended a trip to Ranfurly House where they discovered interesting facts about the Famine, this is part of Primary 7's World Around Us topic.

First of all the boys and girls attended Dungannon Library where they had to carry out their own research on The Irish Famine and The Workhouses. Through this research they discovered when the famine started and how long it lasted, they found out about coffin ships and emigration.

They also discovered information about Under The Hawthorn Tree which was a familiar topic for P7 as this was one of their previous novels.

Through their research Primary 7 also found information about The Workhouse in Dungannon. Their research provided them with a wealth of knowledge about this topic that they did not know before.

Primary 7 then proceeded to Ranfurly House, here they met a women called Mrs Mc Kinley. Through role play she acted as the head of a workhouse and treated the boys and girls through acting how people would have been treated in the workhouses, very strictly and no messing!

The boys and girls dressed up in character and where shocked at how things were back then.

I think it is safe to say Primary 7 would definitely prefer to have things the way they are today!

Many thanks to Ranfurly House for having us, Primary 7 had a very fun day discovering new facts.

We hope to come back soon for another educational and interesting trip!
