Tesco Farm to Fork Programme

25th Mar 2016

As part of the P3/4 theme 'Bread' the class recently visited the Tesco store in Cookstown to take part in their 'Farm to Fork' programme.  Their guide Charlie introduced them initially to the fruit and vegetable stall.  They discussed the importance of eating enough fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy and balanced diet.  The pupils then headed for the cheese and butcher's counters.  Charlie explained how cheese was made and allowed the children to try out different types of cheese.  At the butchers counter the pupils were informed that Tesco's like to purchase their products locally with their meat coming from Magherafelt.  The pupils then visited the bakery, which was of particular interest to them.  They saw the large ovens and plates that the breads were baked in and discussed the most popular breads, which they were informed was tiger bread.  The pupils then moved on to the stores and large fridges and freezers, which made them shiver.  The pupils were treated to some fruit and bread produce as a treat to finish their trip.  Many thanks to Tesco and particular Charlie Bell for a fabulous programme which pupils and teachers really enjoyed.
